Volunteer opportunities

You can make a difference in the lives of people affected by dementia by volunteering with the Alzheimer Society.

There are many volunteer opportunities to choose from. You can volunteer as an individual or as part of a group, on a short-term or long-term basis. We welcome hearing from volunteers of all ages, abilities and interests. Here are some of the areas where you can get involved:

  • Office/Administration
Help our staff by sitting in reception for a morning or afternoon once a week. Answer calls, welcome visitors, accept donations and assist with general administrative tasks.
  • Fundraising and Special Events
Join one of our committees to help plan our fundraising events or volunteer on the big day. You can also help to spread the word about our fundraising events and campaigns by making phone calls and delivering posters and information packages to supporters in our community. Some of our signature events and campaigns include:

    • Coffee Break® Campaign
    • Alzheimer Rendezvous
    • Walk for Memories®
  • Programs
Work with our clients by volunteering with one of our programs that focus on improving the quality of life for those living with dementia and their partners in care. Some of these include:

    • Minds in Motion®
    • Intergenerational Art Program
  • Education and Awareness
Assist with or present education sessions to the general public about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, prevention and brain health, and the programs and services of the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay. You can also help out by answering basic questions at our booth when we participate in health fairs and trade shows. Finally, there may be ways to support our major awareness campaigns which include:

    • Alzheimer Awareness Month
    • 30 Days to Better Brain Health Challenge
  • Ambassadors Program
Part of our efforts to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias includes people who know first-hand what it is like to live with the disease. If you are a person living with dementia or a partner in care and are willing to share your story, we would greatly appreciate you getting in touch. There are many ways to be an Ambassador including:
    Testimonials, quotes and photos
    Public speaking engagements
    Media events and interviews
    Political advocacy
We will only ask you to participate in ways that you are comfortable with and you can do as much or as little as you like. It takes a very courageous person to share their story to help others going through the disease to know they are not alone and to help our community understand why it is important to learn more and provide support to people living with dementia.
  • Board of Directors
    • Our Board of Directors members come from a variety of backgrounds and bring their expertise to help guide and support the operations of the Alzheimer Society. Board members are appointed at our Annual General Meeting held in June. Click here to learn more.
  • Clinical Research
Clinical research uses human volunteers to study the effects of an exposure (for example, a drug or behavior) on a health outcome (for example, blood pressure, symptom relief or improved quality of life). The knowledge we gain through clinical research helps improve the ways we can prevent, diagnose and treat disease. For more information about how you can participate in research and what you should know before you sign up, click here.
