Description

Beendigen is an Ojibway word meaning “come in”.

Our Mission
Our mission is to provide safety and shelter to aboriginal women and children experiencing violence, and to facilitate the cycle of healing through the delivery of culturally appropriate programs and services to individuals and families.

Beendigen is governed by a Board of nine Directors.

Our Values
We believe every woman and child deserves to live in a safe home free from violence. We believe given the opportunity along with learning and healing, women can rise above the abuse that is so oppressive. We assist women to gain a strong foundation, based on the Seven Grandfather Teachings and core social work values, to enable them to move ahead in a positive manner.

Our History
Beendigen has been providing support to women and children in Thunder Bay since 1978. The agency was established to provide temporary shelter for Aboriginal women and their children who were dealing with abuse and were in need of food and shelter. Over the years, Beendigen continues to evolve to provide support services to abused women and their families.

Beendigen has always integrated cultural teachings into many of its healing programs. Cultural awareness, the Seven Grandfather Teachings, medicine wheel and traditional ceremonies are balanced with the education components of individual and group programming. Elders play an important role at Beendigen as they promote a traditional and cultural component which Beendigen believes is vital in the healing of woman abuse.

Beendigen wishes to continually engage reliable, supportive, non-judgmental volunteers (ages 18+) to assist with weekly children’s programs, support groups and crafting groups, by being present during these programs to assist counsellors/facilitators as needed. Duties would also include preparing for the meeting, set up and take down, snacks, and hand out information material. Volunteer opportunities are also available in short term programming sessions. Beendigen requires volunteers who can honour the journeys of the families by maintaining confidentiality and respecting both traditional and clinical healing practices.
