Notice to Volunteers: May 9th – Thunder Bay Literacy Group are not currently using on-site volunteers in their day-to-day operations. Check this page regularly to see when volunteer opportunities open up.

 

 

Volunteering

Volunteering with the Thunder Bay Literacy Group is a very rewarding experience. You can help by becoming: a tutor, a member of our Board of Directors, or a member of our fundraising committee. Descriptions of each volunteer position are provided below:

Tutor

Purpose

  • To act as an instructor for an adult who requires assistance with reading/writing, math or computer skills

Times

  • 3 hours a week in one of our classes, or 2 to 6 hours a week one-to-one tutoring at a public location (i.e. library)

Responsibilities

  • Attend a tutor training session and interview
  • Commit to volunteering for a minimum of six months
  • Be a friendly, positive guide to help your learner reach his/her goals
  • Travel to the meeting locations
  • Submit monthly session reports and demonstrate learner progress (for those tutoring outside of our classes)

Requirements

  • Basic literacy and/or numeracy skills
  • Friendly, caring and respectful attitude (all learners are adults and should be treated as such)
  • Patience and understanding
  • Ability to follow instruction as well as work independently

Board of Directors

Purpose

  • Provide vision and set goals for the Thunder Bay Literacy Group to best serve the community

Times

  • First Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 (excluding July and August)

Responsibilities

  • Meet once a month and other duties as required
  • Review minutes and set vision for the Thunder Bay Literacy Group

Requirements

  • Serve the two year term upon election
  • Friendly, caring and respectful attitude

Fundraising Committee

Purpose

  • Help make decisions about how our fundraising events should run

Times

  • Once or twice a year around the time of our annual Scrabble Tournament (held the last Saturday of February)

Responsibilities

  • Meet once or twice a year, and other duties as required
  • Travel to the meeting locations

Requirements

  • Be willing to discuss how to effectively fundraise so the Thunder Bay Literacy Group can optimize our annual fundraiser
  • Friendly, caring and respectful attitude
